What is

narrative therapy?

Narrative Therapy is a collaborative, non-pathologizing approach to healing that helps people separate themselves from the problems they face. Instead of seeing yourself as the problem, Narrative Therapy invites you to explore the stories you’ve been told—and the ones you tell yourself—about who you are.

These stories are shaped by our relationships, culture, family history, trauma, and lived experiences. Sometimes, they keep us stuck in shame, self-blame, or hopelessness. Narrative Therapy helps you gently examine those dominant stories and uncover the forgotten or overlooked threads of strength, resilience, creativity, and possibility.

In therapy, you’ll work alongside your therapist to:

✅ Name and externalize problems

✅ Reclaim agency over your own life story

✅ Reconnect with values, hopes, and preferred ways of being

✅ Create new, more empowering narratives grounded in your truth

This approach is particularly helpful for survivors of complex trauma, people feeling lost in systems that have failed them, or anyone ready to re-author their life on their own terms.

At Philadelphia EMDR, we believe your story deserves to be heard—and honored—as you write the next chapter with clarity, care, and courage.
